OKAMOTO’S

This young four-piece from Shinjuku, Tokyo’s sound is psychedelic garage mixed with R&B a la the Rolling Stones, the Who and the Stooges. Their name comes from avant-garde painter Taro Okamoto and each member has taken Okamoto as the stage surname in the spirit of the Ramones. 2010 brought them to USA, Australia, and Hong Kong and Vietnam in May, 2011.

OKAMOTO’S is a psychedelic garage rock band made up of four 19-year-olds from Shinjuku, Tokyo, who first got together while still in middle school. Fans of influential Japanese avante-garde artist Taro Okamoto, the members took a cue from the Ramones and adopted stage names. The band consists of founding members Sho Okamoto (vocals), Koki Okamoto (guitar), Reiji Okamoto (drums), and Hama Okamoto (bass).

The group’s career kicked off in 2007, when their breakout performance at their high school festival turned into appearances at music venues throughout Tokyo. Even while preparing to graduate the following year, they continued to refine their energetic live performances into something befitting a band far beyond their young age.

OKAMOTO’S made their recording debut with an appearance on the Columbia compilation "Here Come the Modernity" in February 2009. Gaining acclaim and respect unheard of for bands of their age, they followed it up in June with their debut album, "Here are OKAMOTO’S". In support of the album, they unleashed a touring blitz, starting with a sold-out solo performance to commemorate its release. Playing over ten shows a month, they managed to perform over one hundred times in 2009.

In 2010, OKAMOTO’S brought their music to an international audience when they performed at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas held in March, followed by the six-city Japan Nite US Tour 2010. Taking the US by storm, their enthusiastic performances garnered rave reviews from fans and media alike. As a result of the US tour, OKAMOTO’S was invited to tour Australian in July with the Australian band Thirsty Merc, drawing more than 3000 audiences, and then to perform at the opening reception event for the Hong Kong store of the Japanese street fashion brand, Hysteric Glamour in November, 2010. OKTMOTO’S has been also invited to perform at CAMA Festival in Vietnam in May, 2011.

After a whirlwind year of touring, OKAMOTO’S rushed to release recorded music: they released their long-awaited second album, 10’s, on May 26, 2010 in Japan followed soon by their 3rd album, OKAMOTO'S ni Muchu on November 3rd, the same year. Their first single “Waratte Waratte” from the 3rd album was in heavy rotation on twenty five radio stations and satellite music channels nationwide. Both their major-label debut, 10’s and OKAMOTO'S ni Muchu were released by Ariola Japan, a Sony Music Japan label.
